El Adivinación en el Aurora Dorada

A translation of Divination in the Golden Dawn for Spanish speaking readers. May need proofing.

World Cup Astrology – Yet Another Post Mortem

The German soccer team resorted to superstitious practices to beat England in the World Cup – they consulted PhD students who identified a number of fundamental mistakes that the team was repeatedly making. Pah! What an amateur approach! They should have used Astrology like I did! Far more reliable and a lot less effort. Never mind about Stevie G wandering in-field instead of staying on the wing, and all that malarchy. The fact that Fabio Capello’s native Sun squared both the transiting Saturn and Jupiter (+Uranus) told me straight away that he was not going to come out of the World Cup covered in glory.

Not that I’m saying that I would have helped Joachim Low instead of those PhD Students – I do have some sense of patriotism.

Ritual of the Apocalypse

In honour of the Grand Cross occurring tomorrow (Friday 8th August 2010) I present the following Planetary working. Its aim is to enable the magician to transcend the planetary influences at work – which is the goal of every true Hermetic Adept – instead of being a victim to them, which is how people who think of astrology as something fatalistic tend to react.

The time of the working is dawn. The magician should determine due East – this will be referred to throughout this ritual as “12 o’clock” (as in a clock-face).

Begin by proclaiming: Hekas! Hekas este bebeloi!

Perform the Lesser Banishing Rituals of the Pentagram and Hexagram.

Purify and consecrate the temple with Water and Fire. Circumambulate and adore the Lord of the Universe.

Perform the Bornless Ritual.

Now perform what I term the

Special Invoking Hexagrams of the Apocalypse Ritual.

This is similar in structure to the Supreme Invoking Hexagram Ritual, but adapted as follows:

Start with the Qabalistic Cross

The Rite of Luna

Turn first to “one o’clock” and trace the Invoking Hexagram of Luna, i.e. the first triangle is traced clockwise from the lowest point; the second triangle from the top-most. Vibrate Ararita and Shaddai El Chai, Gabriel, Malkah Be-Tarshishim ve-od Ruachoth Shechalim, Shad Barshemoth Ha-Shartathan and Levanah.

Recite the Invocation of Luna.

The Rite of Jupiter

Turn next to “four o’clock” and trace the Invoking Hexagram of Jupiter (first from Jupiter point, then from Mercury point). Vibrate Ararita and El, Tzadqiel, Hismael, Iohphiel and Tzedeq.

Recite the Invocation of Jupiter.

The Rite of Uranus

Still facing “four o’clock” trace the Special Apocalyptic Hexagram of Uranus. This is the same as the Hexagram of Mercury (because Uranus is similar to Mercury but on a higher arc), but with the sigil of Uranus in the centre. Vibrate Ararita only.

Recite the following Invocation of Uranus (taken from the Orphic Hymns):

GREAT Heav’n, whose mighty frame no respite knows,
Father of all, from whom the world arose:
Hear, bounteous parent, source and end of all,
Forever whirling round this earthly ball;
Abode of Gods, whose guardian pow’r surrounds
Th’ eternal World with ever during bounds;
Whose ample bosom and encircling folds
The dire necessity of nature holds.
Ætherial, earthly, whose all-various frame
Azure and full of forms, no power can tame.
All-seeing Heav’n, progenitor of Time
Forever blessed, deity sublime,
Propitious on a novel mystic shine,
And crown his wishes with a life divine.

The Rite of Pluto

Turn next to “seven o’clock” and trace the Special Apocalyptic Hexagram of Pluto (same as that of Mars, but with Pluto sigil). Vibrate Ararita only.

Recite the following Invocation of Pluto (also taken from the Orphic Hymns).

PLUTO, magnanimous, whose realms profound
Are fix’d beneath the firm and solid ground,
In the Tartarian plains remote from fight,
And wrapt forever in the depths of night;
Terrestrial Jove, thy sacred ear incline,
And, pleas’d, accept thy mystic’s hymn divine.
Earth’s keys to thee, illustrious king belong,
Its secret gates unlocking, deep and strong.
‘Tis thine, abundant annual fruits to bear,
For needy mortals are thy constant care.
To thee, great king, Avernus is assign’d,
The seat of Gods, and basis of mankind.
Thy throne is fix’d in Hade’s dismal plains,
Distant, unknown to rest, where darkness reigns;
Where, destitute of breath, pale spectres dwell,
In endless, dire, inexorable hell;
And in dread Acheron, whose depths obscure,
Earth’s stable roots eternally secure.
O mighty dæmon, whose decision dread,
The future fate determines of the dead,
With captive Proserpine, thro’ grassy plains,
Drawn in a four-yok’d car with loosen’d reins,
Rapt o’er the deep, impell’d by love, you flew
‘Till Eleusina’s city rose to view;
There, in a wond’rous cave obscure and deep,
The sacred maid secure from search you keep,
The cave of Atthis, whose wide gates display
An entrance to the kingdoms void of day.
Of unapparent works, thou art alone
The dispensator, visible and known.
O pow’r all-ruling, holy, honor’d light,
Thee sacred poets and their hymns delight:
Propitious to thy mystic’s works incline,
Rejoicing come, for holy rites are thine.

The Rite of Saturn

Turn next to “ten o’clock,” trace the Invoking Hexagram of Saturn (first from Saturn point, then from Luna point). Vibrate Ararita and YHVH Elohim, Tzaphqiel, Agiel, Zazel and Shabbathai.

Recite the Invocation of Saturn.

The Rite of Mars

Still facing “ten o’clock,” trace the Invoking Hexagram of Mars (first from Mars point, then from Luna point). Vibrate Ararita and Elohim Gebor, Chamael, Graphiel, Bartzabel and Madim.

Recite the Invocation of Mars.

Turn to “12 o’clock.” Analyse the Keyword (INRI)

Purify and consecrate the temple again.

Perform the reverse circumambulation, and adoration to the Lord of the Universe.

Announce: “In the name of Yeheshuah I now release any spirits that have been entrapped by this ceremony.”

Close with the Lesser Banishing Rituals of the Pentagram and Hexagram again.

Star-Cross’d Alex

I was planning on making a public appearance on Sunday afternoon and sell a few copies of my new book Opus Secunda. I had been looking forward to it for some time! Instead: what happens? England are playing Germany that afternoon! 😦

It is all to do with the Saturn-Jupiter opposition at the moment – this if you recall was the reason England was playing in such a mediocre fashion – because their transits made squares to Fabio Capello’s birth-chart. If England had played better and had actually won the group, they would be playing on Saturday instead of Sunday – and I would have my Sunday afternoon free! Grr!

World Cup Astrology – the post mortem

Oh dear, oh dear oh dear. What a disastrous result. Not for England – I mean for my attempts at predicting scores! In my last blog post I said:

Therefore, I am going to stick my neck out and say that England will have a slightly better game this Friday than against USA, however the underlying difficulties which caused them to perform badly have not gone way. Probable result: England to scrape by with a 1-0 victory.

This turned out to be somewhat optimistic – the final score was in fact 0-0. It would have been more accurate to say that in some respects England was both better and worse than they were against the USA. Better in that David James turned out to be a safer pair of hands than Rob Green: worse in that the England forwards were not nearly as good as previously.

It is only with the benefit of hindsight that I can say that the fact of Fabio Capello’s transitting Sun being conjunct his natal Sun was nowhere near significant enough to overcome the T-formed by the latter with the transitting Saturn / Jupiter (+Uranus) opposition.

Personally I doubt that Fabio will be able to shake off the challenging influences of Saturn and Jupiter / Uranus for the rest of this World Cup campaign: however I shall cease to predict further scores from now on.

World Cup Astrology – England vs Algeria

After my successful attempts to predict the outcome of the British General Election, I thought to myself, can I use Astrology to predict the result of the World Cup? As it happens, I recently had a conversation with an astrologer friend of mine, who claimed that one of her colleagues did indeed use astrology to predict the results of football matches. The basic principle is to draw up a chart for the time (kick-off), date and place of the match: the Ascendant represents the Home team, whilst the Descendant is the Away team.

Thinking about this however I quickly saw the draw-back to this approach. During the Football season in England, the vast majority of matches all kick-off simultaneously – 3.30pm on a Saturday afternoon – all within a country which in astrological terms is so small that the difference between one match and another will be minimal. Therefore if the approach suggested were taken, it would imply that on any given Saturday there would be a tendency for either all home or all away teams to win their respective matches. However, this clearly does not reflect reality so if astrology can indeed be used, some deeper considerations ought to be taken into account.

Fortunately I had an idea which was inspired by work on the General Election – to identify the key individuals concerned in each match, and then look at the transits formed between their natal charts and the chart drawn up for the match. This would tell me whether a given individual was likely to have a “good match” or a “bad match.”

I first tested this theory by drawing up charts for the England vs USA game, which took place on 12th June 2010, at Rustenburg, 1830 GMT. I then found England manager Fabio Capello’s birth data – 18 June 1946, San Canzian D’Isonzo (time unknown). I immediately noticed that Capello’s natal Sun was awkwardly placed – it was at right angles to the current Saturn / Jupiter & Uranus opposition. His natal Moon, however, was more favourably placed, being trine to transitting Saturn.

The Sun – representing what one is naturally good at doing. The Moon represents emotions, sensitivity, and in a certain extent popularity (especially when forming aspects with Venus). Thus – what possible result could reconcile Fabio having a difficult game (unfavourable Sun), with the fact that his emotions and popularity with the Press would not necessarily suffer? Clearly, a 1-1 draw! It is easy for me to say that now, writing this after the fact: but I am ashamed to say that when England were 1-0 up only for the ball to bobble out of Rob Green’s hands into the goal, I was secretly delighted that there might be something to my astrological predictions. (I should point out that hours before the game I tweeted that I predicted that “US will give England a difficult time.”)

So on to the England vs Algeria game, which is due to take place this Friday, 1830 GMT in Cape Town. The unfortunate fact is that because Saturn, Jupiter and Uranus are such slow-moving planets, the same factors which caused Fabio to have a mediocre time last Saturday will have hardly improved with the passage of six days. However there is one factor in his favour – the match occurs on his birthday. In Astrological terms, this means that his natal sun is conjunct the transitting sun. Therefore, I am going to stick my neck out and say that England will have a slightly better game this Friday than against USA, however the underlying difficulties which caused them to perform badly have not gone way. Probable result: England to scrape by with a 1-0 victory.

Divination in the Golden Dawn

In the Golden Dawn one mainly thinks of Divination as Geomancy, Astrology, and the Tarot.

“Divination” itself is an ancient concept – and it is only by going back to see what ancient sources said on the subject that one gets to realise how important it really is. One of the most important authorities was an ancient adept known as Iamblichus, who lived in the third and fourth centuries AD, and who wrote an enormously influential work known as “Theurgy, or on the mysteries of the Egyptians.” He was a neo-Platonist: he also admitted to being influenced by the Hermetica, and his writings have influenced the whole Western Mystery Tradition, including the Golden Dawn.

This is what Iamblichus had to say about the subject:

First, then, thou askest that it shall be explained to thee in detail what it is that takes place in the prognosticating of the future. It is impossible to set forth at once what thou art trying to learn. For according to the gist of the question, thou imaginest something like this of the art of prognosticating: as that it is generated, and something existing in the realm of nature. But it is not one of the things that are generated, nor what a certain natural mutation accomplishes, nor some ingenious product which has been invented for useful purposes in everyday life − nor, in short, is it a human accomplishment at all, but divine, and beyond the realm of nature; and having been sent down from the heaven above, unbegotten and eternal, it naturally takes the first place.

“Divine, and beyond the realm of nature” – that is in fact why we call it “Divination” – because what we are really trying to do is not just discover the future, but to discover what is the Will of the Divine in any given situation.

In other words: when you draw up an astrological chart – your first thought should be not that you are looking at an arbitrary arrangement of stars and planets – you are in fact reading off a message sent to you from the Creator of the cosmos. When you draw a tarot card, you are not looking at a piece of cardboard with some pretty pictures, but at a communication from the universe to yourself. And most importantly – when you experience the spark of intuition which unlocks the inner meaning of a tarot spread or astrological chart or geomantic figure, it is not just some psychological process involving the interaction of your conscious and unconscious minds, it is in fact the Divine Will itself speaking to you.

True Divination, therefore, is what turns magic into Theurgy. For example: say you have an idea to cast a spell, or consecrate a talisman for some purpose. What you should do is always perform a Divination beforehand, asking “Is this a good idea?” And often it is the case that a Divination will actually say “No, it’s not a good idea,” or “It will bring about unforeseen consequences,” or even: “It will bring about consequences which you probably could have foreseen if you were brutally honest with yourself.” And so based on that you modify your original intention in light of the Divination, or even abandon it altogether. It can go against your ego, and be a bother, but it has to be done. When you make your magical practice align with the Divine Will through divination, you are entering into a harmonious relationship with the universe. If however you ignore Divination and just go ahead regardless, you are doing nothing better than sorcery, and probably attracting a whole load of unpleasant karmic effects upon yourself.

So: always do Divination with the intention of trying to discover the will of the Divine – not mere fortune telling. Treat it like a divine science – regard your tarot cards and the charts you draw up as sacred objects, if it helps you reinforce these concepts. And when you discern a message coming to you from your efforts at divination, treat it with the respect it deserves and do not ignore it.

Winners & Losers – 3

Nick Clegg

Finally – for this election at any rate, there is Nick Clegg. On April 6th I said:

Clegg is popular right now, and has the opportunity to make a good impression on others.

Which was borne out during the election campaign by his performance in the leaders’ debates. Also:

Like Cameron, he shares the Sun / natal Caput Draconis conjunction, and the Jupiter / natal Saturn conjunction.

The very fact that both he and Cameron have their Caput Draconis in the same place would tend to indicate that their destinies lie together – which is now borne out by the fact that they have formed a coalition government. Finally, I said:

Nick Clegg – will come out of this election very well.

And:

… there will be a Conservative / Liberal Democrat coalition – this will see Clegg rewarded with a senior Cabinet post.

This has been confirmed today with Nick Clegg being named as Deputy Prime Minister – and thus the most senior Liberal politician since David Lloyd George.

Winners and Losers 2

David Cameron

It appears that David Cameron will be Prime Minister after all. On April 6th I said:

David Cameron – could do well, although it will be a difficult time for him.

As it turned out this pretty much summed up his results. Although his party won the most seats in the election, he did not become Prime Minister automatically: it only took until Tuesday for Gordon Brown to finally admit defeat.

Messrs Tredinnick, Corbyn and Hancock

All won their respective seats I am glad to say. Rudi Vis unfortunately did not. This means that unless there are some dark horses in the new intake, there are two less MPs who are sympathetic to astrology and alternative health in the new Parliament.

Astrologers generally

Before I get too egotistical I should point out that a number of astrologers correctly predicted what was going to happen. What I will say though is that there are at least two ironies brought out by this whole affair. I firmly believe that the stars impel and do not compel: but that presupposes that one takes notice of them in the first place. Thus we have a classic situation here that Gordon Brown could have listened to the advice of astrologers and not held the election on that particular date: he also could have listened to the advice that we were giving him and taken pains to avoid making the kind of mistakes from which we said he was in danger. But he did not, so it played out with Brown being the hapless puppet of circumstance.

The other irony – and one which I am especially pleased about – is that David Tredinnick faced opposition in his constituency from some quantum physicist who disliked his stance on homeopathy (nb: what does a quantum physicist know about medicines and healthcare???). However the stars were looking out for the MP, and not for the physicist!

So hooray for astrology and astrologers in general! Politicians: you ignore us at your peril!

The General Election – Winners and Losers 1

A month ago, I attempted to use astrology to predict the outcome of the General Election. Let’s see what has in fact happened:

Gordon Brown

On April 6th I said:

…Gordon will be facing a time of tests and trials – he will find it difficult to attract the things and people he wants in his life…

He certainly does find it difficult to attract the things and people he wants in his life, i.e. things (staying in power) and people (Nick Clegg). The Telegraph reports that Brown’s attempts to broker a deal with Clegg ended in acrimony, although Clegg probably did not help things by suggesting that Brown should resign.

… he will suffer a series of set-backs that cast doubt on his ability to win.
Prediction, April 6th.

Let’s see: there were the dismal performances in the leader’s debates (see here, here and here) for a start. And then of course there was  the infamous gaffe in which he called a pensioner a bigot whilst wearing a TV microphone. And of course most importantly I predicted:

Gordon Brown – cheerio.

Which came to pass on May 11th 2010.
