Looters spared by Void Of Course Moon

The seal of Andromalius.

So there I was, thinking, “What can I, Alex Sumner, the world’s greatest expert on the occult, do to help the people of London who have been affected by the riots recently? I know: I’ll evoke the demon Andromalius to get all the looters to return the property they have stolen!” So I decided to cast a Horary figure to see whether this was a good idea or not.

And what do you know? The Moon – which, in Horary astrology indicates the circumstances in which the question arises, would not form a major aspect with another planet until after it left the current sign (Capricorn). It would however form several minor aspects, i.e. be inconjunct to a retrograde Mercury, and semi-sextile to Neptune and Caput Draconis.

So here is my dilemma. According to one definition, if the Moon does not form a major aspect to another planet before it leaves the sign it is in, it is said to be “Void of Course” (VOC). If a Horary figure is drawn when the Moon is VOC, the only information it provides is that “Nothing will come of this question” (NB: not “the whole chart is meaningless” – the chart has a meaning, just not a very helpful one). So unless VOC is defined as “any aspect” instead of “any major aspect,” it would appear that the looters have been spared the wrath of Sumner by a Void of Course moon.

(If however the chart is not VOC, I would still be put off because the Lord of the Ascendant – Mercury is not only retrograde, but opposed to retrograde Neptune. Deceit, deception and illusion (retrograde Neptune) are likely to cause my project to go awry (retrograde Mercury)!)

More generally though, when looking at the chart for the day, one notices that there is a Grand Cross featuring four Malefic planets – Mars, Saturn, Pluto (r) and Uranus (r). At the height of the trouble several days ago, the Moon transitted retrograde Pluto!

This could of course be a coincidence … or it could mean that THERE WILL BE FRESH TROUBLE NEXT WEEK – when the Moon transits Uranus. There will also probably be a new development in the phone hacking scandal when it transits the Mercury-Neptune (both retrograde) opposition.

Horary figure for the question: "I intend to evoke Andromalius to cause all looters to return their stolen property. Is this a good idea?" Note also the current planetary positions.

Alex explains May 21 Doomsday

Apparently, the Rapture is happening this Saturday. This is going to be a bit of a pain for me as I was planning on going up to London for a day out! I do hope that the train and tube drivers are not particularly righteous as it will be a bugger getting up there (or getting home, depending on what time it all kicks off). Anyway – some bloke in America says it is taking place, so it must be true. “But Alex! What do you as the world’s greatest expert on all things occult have to say about this?” I hallucinate that I hear you ask. Needless to say, I immediately applied my powers of Astrology to solve the problem.

When one casts a horoscope for May 21st 2011, one notices two things: first – there is a 4-way stellium in Taurus (or Aries if you are working sidereally *cough* *cough*) – Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Mercury are all conjunct one another. Secondly, three of the slower moving planets – Saturn, Uranus and Pluto – form a “T” – i.e. Saturn and Uranus are opposite one another, whilst Pluto is square to both of them. Pluto is in fact trine to Venus, Mars and Mercury, though this by itself should prove exciting but in a good sense.

What is fundamental to realise is that Venus, Mars and Mercury will be fairly close together for most of the year. Moreover – because Saturn, Uranus and Pluto are slow-moving planets, their energies apply to the long term, not to pinning down specific dates. It is only the Pluto Trine that can said to be specific to that particular time-period.

Hence, here are my predictions for so-called May 21 Doomsday:

  1. The end of the world is not going to occur on May 21st.
  2. If anything momentous does occur, it is most likely to be a revolution in music and/or the arts – for example an artistic event which causes great controversy.
  3. A lot of people will be complaining about bad things occurring to them: however – this will be more to do with the times generally, not Saturday May 21st specifically.

Why My New Book Is Published Tomorrow…

Wednesday 11th May is an exceptional day for invoking Mercury. In fact it is a very good day for invoking a number of planets, as I shall explain shortly. Mercury is the planet of Communication, but it is also associated with businesses and businessmen: the words “Merchant” and “Mercantile” and indeed “Market” all derive from “Mercury” who was in ancient times the God of Merchants and traders. There are spells for attracting customers to ones business in The Greek Magical Papyri which involve invoking Hermes, the Greek equivalent of Mercury. Indeed, one of my most fondly-remembered money spells involved me creating a Mercury Talisman.

So, when I was trying to work out when would be a good day to start a new business venture – e.g. announcing the launch of my new book – I endeavoured to draw up an electional chart for some time when Mercury was auspiciously placed. My criteria for drawing up the chart were as follows:

  • It ought to be when the Moon is waxing – this is traditionally a good time for attracting and invoking.
  • Mercury must not be retrograde.
  • The Moon should be well-aspected to Mercury – conjunct, trine or sextile.
  • It ought to be on the day and in the hour of Mercury.
  • Mercury should preferably be well aspected to Jupiter (which amongst other things represents good-fortune in the long-term), the Sun (which in financial matters indicates ready-cash), and should have as few bad-aspects to other planets as possible.

By definition the Moon is waxing fifty percent of the time, so this could only be in 26 out 52 weeks in any given year. By avoiding when Mercury is retrograde this narrowed it down somewhat: by specifying the day and hour of Mercury this narrowed it down even more specifically to sunrise on a Wednesday morning. NB: there are other Mercury-hours during the day of course, but I thought that dawn would be when I was most likely to have time available for Magick.

This left me with the task of checking the various remaining Wednesdays in 2011 to see when (a) the Moon formed a good aspect with Mercury; and (b) when Mercury was well-aspected to other planets. Soon, one particular date stood out noticeably in comparison to the rest: Wednesday 11th March (see diagram).

Electional chart for sunrise in London, UK, on Wednesday 11th May 2011.

What first struck me most about this chart is that there is an interesting four-way Stellium in Aries consisting of not only Mercury and Jupiter but also Venus and Mars as well. Moreover – the Moon forms a Trine aspect to the lot of them. Thankfully the presence of Saturn which cast a baleful influence over the nuptials of Wills & Kate two weeks ago has now moved on.

The only possible downer is the Sun – there is a only a very weak semi-sextile between Mercury, although at least this is better than nothing. The Sun however does form a square to the Moon. I interpret this to mean that although a business venture begun tomorrow is likely be successful in the long term, large amounts of cash will not be forthcoming immediately – e.g. not until late 2012 to middle 2013.

So my new book will be a slow-burning success! All attempts to defy the stars by making it a bestseller sooner rather than later will however be greatly appreciated. 😉

Royal Wedding: Astrology Proved Right!

This is a bit of a sad post for me, as I had rather wished I had not been right after all. On the positive side I am glad to see that anarchists and satanists did not disrupt the Royal Wedding after all. However, over the weekend it was reported that Wills & Kate had decided to postpone their honeymoon: whilst today it was reported that the couple face separation as Prince William deploys to Falklands.

It is with no pride that I distinctly remember what I wrote in a previous blog post:

Sometime last year I went on the radio – the BBC World Service no less – to explain that astrologically speaking there is something wrong with the date that Wills and Kate have chosen for their wedding. The main concern I identified was that on April 29th 2011, Saturn – the planet of Death, delays and restrictions – was opposed to Venus, the planet of Love.

In effect, the Wedding Day was the day on which the marriage was “born,” and hence the stars on that day constitute a natal chart of sorts. Hence although the day itself went alright, the Saturn influence will show itself as a recurring pattern throughout the marriage. It would appear from the news stories referred to above that this is already beginning to rear its ugly head.

My advice to the Royal couple is therefore to take steps to knock this on the head now, so it does not become a feature of the marriage. Seeing as the Honeymoon has been postponed, there is now a rather obvious date later in the year when it would be an auspicious day for them to take it, viz Friday October 7th, which was the day I suggested for their wedding in the first place!

Royal Wedding: Anarchy and the Occult

Sometime last year I went on the radio – the BBC World Service no less – to explain that astrologically speaking there is something wrong with the date that Wills and Kate have chosen for their wedding. The main concern I identified was that on April 29th 2011, Saturn – the planet of Death, delays and restrictions – was opposed to Venus, the planet of Love. It so happened that on the same radio programme there was an astrologer from India who claimed that Saturn was not important in Jyotisa, and that rather the day itself was “75% auspicious.”

Some time later I related this incident to an Indian astrologer I met at a swanky dinner party – he looked non-plussed. “Of course Saturn’s important!” he said. “What the hell was this guy talking about?”

Anyway, that is by the by. In the news today I read that a bunch of anarchists are planning to “curse” Wills and Kate’s big day, because they object to such an ostentatious display of extravagance at a time when there are widespread cuts in public expenditure. Yesterday there were protests in central London: today the ringleader revealed his “cunning plan” to the Daily Express:

The anarchists behind yesterday’s riot are also preparing to “curse” next month’s wedding with a bizarre plot in the shape of a giant occult symbol.

They aim to occupy five destinations to represent a five-pointed star or pentacle, a symbol revered by Satanists;* the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace, in a bid to stretch police lines and throw William and Kate’s big day into chaos.

They hope to get the ceremony abandoned or at least moved. Yesterday was said to be “phase one” of the plot.

* My emphasis.

Ok we should bear in mind that this is the Daily Express not the Daily Mail, so I am prepared to allow them some lee-way in the standards of their reporting. I have explained about the Pentagram before. Before we get concerned about the ceremony being moved, we should bear in mind that this would not be a complete disaster in itself. In another blog post I have explained that there is in fact one date later in 2011 which is actually far better than April 29th, astrologically speaking. If the Royal Wedding were postponed until Friday October 7th, this would actually work out as being far more auspicious for Wills and Kate. However: let us assume that the Royal couple intend to press ahead with April 29th, and that these anarchists also intend to press ahead with their bizarre “Satanic” plot. Are the Satanists likely to succeed?

Looking at the situation from the point of view of a magician, I would have to say, “almost certainly not.” Even if the date does get moved, the Satanists would be in no position to take credit for it. The first and most obvious point is that the ringleader has blabbed all to the national press! There is a reason why Silence is one of the four powers of the Sphinx – it is one of the sources of a magician’s own power. By opening his big mouth he can now be assured that the combined will-power of millions of well-wishers who want the wedding to go successfully will be directed against them.

Secondly, this whole business of going to such extravagant lengths is far too histrionic. I can just about imagine how a Pentagram might be used in a magical ritual to disrupt the wedding, although a ritual conducted in private somewhere would be far simpler and just as likely to succeed as trying to deploy ones minions across central London. Also there is the question of just how much depth of thought they have put into the preparation for this bizarre pentagram working. If they think that deploying themselves in a pentagram-arrangement across the capital is just going to work all by itself, then of course they are prey to the worst kind of superstitious rubbish.

As I noted above with regards to the Saturn-opposition on April 29th, Wills and Kate are likely to have a tough time of it that day without a bunch of Satanists trying to shove their oar in. If there is any disruption on the day it will ultimately be due to a prior disposition of the planets, not a bunch of unwashed agitators pretending to be great and mighty sorcerors.

Yet it is the knowledge of the astrological situation on April 29th which conversely provides the key to a way out for the happy couple from their troubles. The essence of the Hermetic tradition is that by raising ones consciousness to a sufficient degree one can transcend the crossed-conditions of Fate, for which the planets of astrology are their outward symbols. The methods of overcoming the planets are nothing less than the rituals of e.g. the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Hence: we know that Saturn is badly placed on April 29th, thus one way to overcome this would be to cast the Supreme Banishing Hexagram of Saturn ritual, in order to counter-act that planet’s effects.

In conclusion therefore: I, Alex Sumner, volunteer to use my occult powers to ward off the effects of these anarcho-satanists and thus ensure that the 29th goes well for the Royal couple. 🙂

Astrology – QOTD

Sri Yukteswar Giri - Astrologer and Yogi

“Charlatans have brought the stellar science to its present disrepute. Astrology is too vast, both mathematically and philosophically, to be rightly grasped except by men of profound understanding. If if ignoramuses misread the heavens, and see there a scrawl instead of a script, that is to be expected in this imperfect world. One should not dismiss the wisdeom with the ‘wise.’

“…A child is born on that day and at that hour when the celestial rays are in mathematical harmony with his individual karma. His horoscope is a challenging portrait, revealing his unalterable past and its probable future results. But the natal chart can be rightly interpreeted only by men of intuitive wisdom: these are few.

“The message bold blazoned across the heavens at the moment of birth is not meant to emphasize fate – theresult of past good and evil – but to arouse man’s will to escape from his universal thraldom. What he has done, he can undo. None other than himself was the instigator of the causes for whatever effects are now prevalent in his life. He can overcome any limitation, because he created it by his own actions in the first place, and because he has spiritual resources which are not subject to planetary pressure.

“Superstitious awe of astrology makes one an automaton, slavishly dependent on mechanical guidance. The wise man defeats his planets – which is to say, his past – by transferring his allegiance from the creation to the Creator. The more he realizes his unity with the Spirit, the less he can be dominated by matter. the soul is ever-free; it is deathless because birthless. It cannot be regimented by stars.”

Sri Yukteswar Giri, quoted in Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramhansa Yogananda.

Invasion of Libya Predicted by Astrology

In my blog-post How To Predict The General Election Result Part 3, posted in May 2010, I wrote, regarding the day of the UK general election:

On May 6th itself there will be a T between the Moon, Sun and Mars: i.e. the Moon is square to the Sun, which is square to Mars, which is in opposition to the Moon. The people (Moon) will be challenging the Government (Sun) to action, but warfare etc (Mars) will be holding it back – which in turn will upset everyone. Whoever wins on Thursday is going to have a tough time of it in the new parliament.

What now follows I guess critics will probably say is an exercise in retrocognition, but the fact is that roundabout the same time as I posted on this my blog, I went to some smart reception or other in London – as you do – and having invoked Dionysus several times I boldly expostulated on my further thoughts on the situation. The astrological figure for the day of the 2010 General Election was effectively the day on which the present Parliament was “born” – hence, factors indicated on that horoscope also represented influences on the life of the forthcoming Government.

Therefore, I held forth to my rapt companion at the time, because Mars was in such an awkward position in relation to the Sun and Moon, I predicted that the warfare of which I had written in my blog-post referred to warfare taking place in the new Parliament. I.e. not just continuation of the warfare then going on, but a major escalation, such as the opening of hostilities on a brand new front.

I did not mention Libya by name at the time. So before you say “Alex conned us by using a deliberately sensational blog-title to induce us to read this,” please bear in mind the following important point: it was the fact the new Government would get involved in new hostilities which could have been predicted, rather than with a specific country per se. I dread to say that it was inevitable, because theoretically the Government could have chosen to avert this particular outcome – or perhaps they knew it was likely and so did it anyway. The Government does not appear to make a habit of listening to astrologers – after all, they have not indicated they are going to take me up on my suggestion regarding Ebooks (yet).

Lilith Day: March 19th 2011

"Lilith" (1892), John Collier

The Moon will be at Perigee in relation to Earth on Saturday March 19th 2011 – the closest it has apparently been for 19 years. In fact the Perigee will coincide with the March Full Moon. Now, Mental Health Practitioners in the UK’s NHS swear blind that a Full Moon always draws their most troublesome clients out of the woodwork. And guess what? The forthcoming Lunar Perigee is causing a whole load of whack-jobs to spout forth on public internet forums about all the kinds of disaster that are going to happen, e.g. tsunamis, earthquakes (“the one in Japan was just a warning” etc), the apocalypse, dogs and cats lying down together, etc.

Astrologically speaking however we are in for a far more intriguing though less dramatic time. “Lilith” the so-called Dark Moon is conjunct the Sun and opposite the Moon – on the cusp of the Sun’s entry into Aries at the Equinox. “Lilith” as an astrological phenomenon is a relatively recent innovation, although it has over 100 years on Ophiuchus. It is the one of the two foci upon which the eliptical orbit of the Moon is based, the other being within the Earth’s sphere itself. Hence, when the Moon is at perigee, Lilith will always be 180º (Opposition) to it (conversely when at apogee it will be in conjunction).

Lilith may be said to be the “Dark Side of the Moon,” i.e. it represents the hidden, repressed or unconscious aspects of what the Moon represents to the conscious. Because of the conjunction with the Sun, one may speculate that babies born next Saturday – or indeed events – will have the habit of exposing that which is hidden to the light of day, and not necessarily in a way that one would find desirable.

“The Owls Are Not What They Seem…”

As to who Lilith was, it appears that since the time of the Old Testament she was identified as some sort of “night demon” – the name “Lilith” is etymologically similar to the Hebrew word for night. Indeed, other semitic cultures referred to night-demons by similar names. Lilith is mostly mentioned in the Talmud and Dead-Sea Scrolls where, either as a generic term or as a person, she was held responsible for things like abortions, nocturnal emissions on the part of males, leading men astray etc.

However: the idea that Lilith was Adam’s first wife before Eve does not actually date back to the time of the Old Testament, but much later – the eighth to tenth centuries AD. However one should also note that the Zohar itself is not older, so there is as much to say that the Lilith-as-first-wife myth is a traditional belief as is the Qabalah.

A curious fact is that the Hebrew word for “Owl” is “Night-bird” and thus etymologically similar to “Lilith” as well. This has led some to speculate that references to Owls in translations of the Old Testament are actually referring to Lilith. Not wishing to stir up the Conspiracy Theorists too much but the Cremation of Care ceremony in Bohemian Grove takes place in front of a large Owl-like statue. Just sayin’ 😉

Major New Website Update

You now have the chance to look at not just one but two new pages on my website – both of which represent some of the magical work I have been doing over the past year or so.

Firstly, there is the latest instalment in my series on skrying with the Enochian being EHNB. This being quite involved, I felt it needed a page of its own – which I have entitled Cosmic Alchemy. The reason I did not publish it sooner was because this update involved me doing some extra magical work which, due to an electional chart I drew up, I could only accomplish last weekend.

Secondly, there is a piece which represents my first tentative thoughts on a new theory of the Tattvas – which I have entitled Saptantattva (“The Seven Elements”). I include this because it has been colouring my outlook on magic recently.

Both these pieces can be accessed from the Articles page of this website.

Ophiuchus – The Real Deal

Proposed symbol for Ophiuchus

Recently across the interwebby-type thing there it has been suggested that a new constellation – Ophiuchus – be included within the Zodiac. Actually some people have been saying this for around 16 years or more, however the most recent publicity to the notion has been generated by a statement by the Minnesota Planetarium Society – so it is rather cheeky that they claim to have only recently discovered it. Obviously time does not pass so quickly in that part of America!

The argument is that because Ophiuchus is in the same general vicinity as the other constellations which make up the Zodiac (nb: not “Horoscope” *) it should be added thereto. IMO, however, Ophiuchus should not and probably won’t be included in conventional Astrology – and with good reason. The rationale of Astrology is that it is the direct continuation of the ancient Pagan religions in unbroken succession from their heyday thousands of years ago into the present day. It has millenia of established practice behind it, and it provides both the language and the vocabulary of the Hermetic tradition. Hence – the only extent to which any constellation or heavenly body can be included in astrology – whether existing or a new candidate – is that to which it is reflected in ancient practice, and ancient mythology – which after all makes up the archetypes of the collective unconscious. Whilst there are various myths and legends surrounding Ophiuchus as a constellation in the general sense, it has no established mythology as an astrological entity. One cannot, for example, say which planet rules it, which planets are exalted in it, what planets are in their fall or detriment in it, what Element it should be, or whether it should be Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable.

Needless to say, this has probably whipped straight over the heads of the Minnesota Planetarium Society who, being astronomers, are not thinking about this from an astrological point of view.

Therefore, as an astrologer myself, I would recommend simply ignoring the current talk about there being a new sign of the Zodiac. And to the Minnesota Planetarium Society, I say: “G’Ophiuchus Yourselves.”

* The reason I say “not Horoscope” is because there is only one Zodiac – but there are currently 7 billion different Horoscopes. The Zodiac is what is in the sky, but the word “Horoscope” refers to an individual’s astrological chart generally, and their first-house marker (Ascendant) specifically.
