Jimmy’s A Vile…

Over here in Britain, everyone’s gone sex-mad and not in a good way. First there was a notorious story of a teacher who ran off with a 15 year old school-girl. Then there was the revelations about the deceased disc jockey Jimmy Savile who it is claimed had a fondness for girls who were not legally competent – either by reason of age or physical disability. Now the can of worms is well and truly open and it seems that every person in broadcasting, alive or dead, who ever had a peccadilo is having their past come back to haunt them.

What is wrong with Britain? And why is it happening now?

It occurred to the Sumner Family Brain Cell to look to the stars for guidance. The Jimmy Savile story first broke on 30th September 2012 in the form of publicity for a forthcoming reveal-all documentary. At the time, Venus, the planet of relationships, was in opposition to retrograde Neptune, the planet of deceit and shameful cover-ups. Meanwhile, square to both of them (and thus making a T formation) was Mars, the planet of widespread public anger. Venus was thus challenging Mars to stir it into action; Mars was challenging Neptune. If only one more planet moved into formation, then there would have been a Grand Cross, a pattern associated with all hell breaking loose.

The Grand Cross occurred on 3rd October 2012, when the Moon duly obliged. Coincidentally this was the same day that the exposé about Jimmy Savile aired on ITV.

Chart drawn up for 3rd October 2012, at 23.10pm

Let us postulate that this stellar configuration does indeed have something to do with the scandal then breaking. The question then arises, why should this involve Jimmy Savile in particular? And not some other seedy character with skeletons in the living room? For this I calculated Jimmy’s birth chart, and then looked at the transits made therewith by the chart for 3rd October 2012.

Outer ring: planets as at 3rd October 2012, 23.10pm.
Inner ring: natal chart of Jimmy Savile, 31st October 1929, Leeds (birth-time approximated).

As you can see, the four planets of the Grand Cross were transitting his natal Neptune. Venus – conjunction; Neptune – opposition; Mars (and Caput Draconis), as well as the Moon on the other side – both Square.

It is interesting also to note Savile would have been experiencing a “Uranus Return” – and the Sun was in opposition to both the natal and transiting planets. I notice that one commentary about natal Uranus opposite transiting sun is you will do things that may alienate people. So all in all, it seems quite natural for these revelations to have come out when they did.

Finally, it is worth noting that this was a deceased man we are talking about – yet the stars still seemed to be affecting him! An argument if ever there was one for leading a good moral life while alive, as dying is not necessarily a means of escape. As a wise man (I believe it was Lemmy from Motorhead) once said: your bones will turn to dust, your possessions will be taken by other people, your money will pass back into the system,  but your reputation is the only thing you leave in this world which will still belong to you after your death.

On Astrology

Astrologer poking his head out of the sphere of fixed stars to see what lies beyond

“Help! I’m stuck!” 😉

Astrology is an Art, and more importantly, the continuation of a tradition which stretches back to ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt – and times and places even more remote.

Anyone who makes a casual study of Astrology might surmise that since (for example) the planet Venus is said to represent love and relationships, and Mercury represents communication, and furthermore that the Roman deities bearing the same names were the Goddess of Love, and the Messenger of the Gods respectively, then modern Astrology is somehow connected with ancient Roman mythology. And they would be entirely correct! In ancient times, the people of the day did not believe that the planets were named after the gods: they believed that the planets were the gods. Therefore, by noting the movements of the planets, they sought to understand how their gods affected their daily lives.

Astrology, therefore, is really the direct continuation of the old Pagan religions, from ancient right into modern times. Therefore, in order to really understand Astrology, one ought to consider it not from a “scientific” (in the modern sense) point of view, nor from a psychological or even a “New Age” point of view: but instead ask – “how would the ancients have viewed it?”

Fortunately, one ancient sage named Hermes Trismegistos spoke with refreshing clarity on the subject. He said:

Nay more, if we must boldly speak the truth, the true “man” is e’en higher than the gods, or at the [very] least the gods and men are very whit in power each with the other equal. For no one of the gods in heaven shall come down to the earth, o’er-stepping heaven’s limit; whereas man doth mount up to heaven and measure it.

That is to say: the “gods” are the planets of astrology. Although they influence the earth, they cannot “over-step heaven’s limit” i.e. stray outside their regular course, but man can, through the use of his reason and other faculties, take account of their influence, and eventually overcome them.

Thus to the ancients in general – and Hermes Trismegistos in particular – Astrology is neither deterministic nor fatalistic. Instead, properly understood, it is the key to achieving true Free Will: by learning about what influences are affecting one’s life, one can learn to escape from them, and thus rise “higher than the gods.”

This, incidentally, is why one should be cautious when you hear about an Astrologer talking about “bad luck.” If I were to say that such and such a thing would lead to ill-fortune, the very fact that I have warned you about it gives you the key to escape it.

THE FUTURE IS NOT CARVED IN STONE – WE ALL HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE IT IF WE WANT.

What The Stars Have in Store for … Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin

Vladimir Putin

What with three members of Pussy Riot being jailed in Russia, I thought it would be a good time to bring my powers of Astrology to bear on what will happen to Vladimir Putin, and guess what! His fate is writ in the heavens!

Background: Vladimir Putin

Putin, born 7th October 1952 in St Petersburg (or Leningrad as it was) has a Stellium i.e. a three-way conjunction prominently in his birth chart: Sun, Mercury and Saturn are all in Libra. This is actually a Quadrivium, if you include Neptune as well.

Unfortunately, right at this moment, both Saturn and Mars are in conjunction in Libra, which means that both these planets are transiting this Stellium – hence now is a time for major upsets in Putin’s life. So for example his second Saturn return – which marks the transition from maturity into old age – is taking place at a time when he is finding it a tough time to get his ideas across and present himself in a favourable light (Saturn – Mercury transit) which ironically is what is most important to him right now (Saturn – Sun transit). However, the influence of Mars transiting this Stellium means that he wants to battle every problem he comes up against. Although he’s facing all these difficulties, he wants to throw a lot of energy into solving them nonetheless.

Horary question: “What will happen to Vladimir Putin?”

This being the case, after having made a note of his transits, I went on to make a Horary divination, based upon the question “What will happen to Vladimir Putin?” The time, date and place for the question was today, 18th August 2012, 1048 British Summer Time (0948 GMT), Essex, UK. In the diagram below the stars and planets relating the Horary question itself are in the outer ring, whilst Putin’s natal chart is in the inner ring for comparison.

Stars for 18th August 2012 + Putin's birth chard

Outer ring (red): the stars for 18th August 2012
Inner ring (blue): Vladimir Putin’s natal chart (7th October 1952, St Petersburg)

The position of Luna (outer ring, in red) indicates the circumstances of the origin of the question. This is square to Jupiter, the planet of Rulers, suggesting that (surprise, surprise) the responsibilities of statesmanship have pushed Putin into his current troubles. This is in a succedent house and a mutable sign: and given that it is nine degrees past the Sun, this would indicate Putin’s current problems relate to something which happened just over nine years ago (29th – 30th March 2003). In other words, the Pussy Riot incident is only the most recent manifestation of a situation which has been many years in the making. Checking back on Wikipedia would suggest that the most important thing that Putin was involved in round about that time was the Chechnya situation: a new constitution was enacted in Chechnya on 22nd March 2003 by a pro-Moscow government which would give Chechnya limited autonomy whilst remaining most definitely under Russian (Putin’s) hegemony. However, before one says that Putin’s problems were caused by this or that, one should also note that Luna is opposed by Neptune, the planet of illusions, implying that the full details of Putin’s real predicament is being concealed from the public at large – and from the world’s media.

Putin himself is represented by the descendant, the Lord of which is Mars. As noted earlier, this is conjunct Saturn. I uncovered this quote regarding Saturn / Mars conjunctions:

“Generally you feel that endings and beginnings are the pits. When you see the end coming you resist, and when you feel some new idea about to take hold, you resist. Your life of resistance prevents you from the rate of progress you deserve, and you need to lighten up.”

If this does not describe Putin’s relation to the Presidency, nothing does! He stubbornly clings on to power because he is afraid to lose it, but ironically it will only be by retiring that Putin will achieve his full potential as a human being.

As regards the end of the matter, this is shown by the fourth house. In regards to the question itself, this is Capricorn whose ruler is Saturn, the planet of endings! Saturn has already been mentioned above, in regards to his transits: I would therefore predict that Putin is doomed to be permanently affected by his current problems – his negative public image, his worry about what other people think about him, his advance into old age – and is not going to recover from them. This being conjunct Mars suggests that the only possible solution is to retire gracefully, to avoid a personal calamity through stubbornly clinging on to power.

Alternatively one could argue that the fourth house in relation to Putin himself (who is represented by the descendant) is Cancer, ruled by the Moon, indicating that Putin is going to be continually harassed by the problems of statesmanship for as long as he choses to remain President.

Happy Birthday, Rest In Peace

A couple of years ago, an astrologer I know gave a talk in which he demonstrated the natal chart and death chart of the same person. Lo and behold the planets in the latter made a whole load of transits (mainly conjunctions) with those in the former! Curiously though these conjunctions were not to my mind associated with death in particular – it was just, so this astrologer claimed, the fact that there were a lot of them.

I scoffed. “If there were anything to this,” I said, trying to do a reductio ad absurdum, “that would mean that there is an increased likelihood of dying on your birthday, because that is the one transit with your natal chart – the Solar Return – which happens to everyone every year!” How I laughed…

… Until today when I read this morning’s Daily Telegraph, in which there was an article entitled We are more likely to die on our birthday than any other day.

According to the article,

Researchers who studied more than two million people over 40 years found a rise in deaths from heart attacks, strokes, falls and suicides.

There was a 34.9 per cent rise in suicides, 28.5 per cent rise in accidental deaths not related to cars, and a 44 per cent rise in deaths from falls on birthdays.

However the article also adds, rather disingenously,

…[R]isk of birthday death rose as people got older.

Well no shit Sherlock! That couldn’t be anything to do with old age, could it? Even so, it is nice to see science actually backing up astrology for a change.

Solar Eclipse: May 2012

Solar eclipse

Solar eclipse

A rare astronomic event is taking place on 20th May 2012, starting at 21:10 GMT and ending some four hours later the next morning: a full (annular) Solar Eclipse, visible from parts of South-East Asia and the United States. Astrologically speaking, this means that for this brief period, the Sun, Moon, and Lunar Node will all be in perfect conjunction.

This reminds me of a theory I heard that this is the real meaning of the Osiris – Set – Horus myth. Osiris (the Sun) is killed by Set (the Moon passing in front of it) who is in turn avenged by Horus (note how the Sun emerging from behind the Moon looks like a giant Solar Hawk – the “jewel” of the ring being the Hawk’s body, with its wings stretching out to either side). See the picture to the left.

That was the good news: the bad news comes from a conversation I was having recently with an astrologer friend of mine. He pointed out that the last time such an event occurred, the countries from which the full eclipse was visible all suffered chaos and disaster within a few years of it taking place! Referring to the one which occurred on 11th August 1999, he pointed out that the course of the eclipse crossed most of Europe, the Middle East and Afghanistan, and what do you know, now we have the Eurozone crisis, the Afghan conflict and the second Gulf War.

To be quite frank, this reminds me of the story of the Buddha, who told the grieving widow: “I will raise your son from the dead if you bring me some Earth from a house where no-one has ever died.” However: let’s suspend our disbelief for a moment and look at what is occurring this May. The eclipse promises to start in China, go up via Japan (just missing South Korea), arc across the Pacific Ocean and hit the western seaboard of America, ending in Texas. Intriguingly, for the most part it will be following the course of the tectonic faultlines that circumscribe the Pacific.

Now, I’m not saying that China, Japan, and the United States are going to be destroyed in a conflagration of Earthquakes and tidal waves… BUT: the Egyptological myth quoted above may in fact point the way to how – magically speaking – these countries can escape or mitigate the Setian-destruction, i.e. to invoke Horus. Either that, or drop a reasonable contribution into the Alex Sumner Appreciation Fund and I can put you in touch with estate agents should you want to buy a holiday home in Europe. 🙂

What the stars have in store for The Sun On Sunday

Rupert Murdoch and his son James (aka Burns & Smithers from the Simpsons)

Rupert Murdoch and his son James

The world was in mourning yesterday when Rupert Murdoch, to absolutely no-one’s surprise at all, confirmed that The Sun newspaper would be launching a Sunday edition. Vigilant web-observers had reported that the domain name had been registered the very day after the closure of the News of the World was announced last year. What is news however is that the date of the first issue has been confirmed as Sunday 26th February 2012.

I have therefore taken it upon myself to cast a horoscope for the paper, in order to see how Murdoch’s latest enterprise will fair. As the paper is based in London, and will be available from midnight onwards, I have taken 12am London, UK, on Sunday 26th February 2012 as the time, date and place for the chart.

Birth chart for "The Sun On Sunday"

Birth chart for The Sun on Sunday courtesy of Astrodienst.com

 The genesis of the idea

Rupert Murdoch probably decided the launch date for the Sun on Sunday two weeks previously (12th February) – which just so happened to be the date the Sun announced that he was due to fly into London (Moon is two degrees past Venus in a Cardinal sign and a succedent house).  No surprises that it comes about as a direct result of the trials he has been going through recently (Moon opposite Saturn). That the Moon is in the fifth house AND in conjunction with Venus indicates that Murdoch was probably being over-dramatic in doing so, acting from romantic notions about what should become of the new paper.

“Birth-chart data”

The paper has Sun-Pisces and Scorpio-Ascendant. The latter indicates that the face the paper presents to the public will be overly concerned with both Sex and Death, whilst the former indicates that its attempts at factual reportage will be marked by flights of fantasy, wishful thinking, and a tendency to adopt a dreamy view of the world as opposed to one which is strictly accurate. The fantasy / wishful thinking aspect will also be evident through its writing style, and the editorial will be forthright in putting forward the paper’s “beliefs” (Mercury in Pisces).

The paper’s sun sign, being on the IC, indicates that its primary focus will be to establish a safe and solid house style which will see it through the long-term. Given that its sun- and mercury- are both trine to the ascendant, this indicates that the paper will be successful in integrating its fantasy / wishful thinking style with its Sex / Death subject-matter.

Prospects for the future

The paper will generally do well at least for the first twenty-one months of its existence, but will face a severe crisis in November 2013, which is when Saturn transits the paper’s ascendant. The edition of Sunday November 24th 2013 will be a time of particular difficulty for the paper. The paper will be forced to face up to its responsibilities and adopt a serious tone – a significant number of staff will be forced to leave as the paper tries to slim down. This does not necessarily entail fatal consequences for the paper, as it will be able to put across its position to the general public very well (Mercury is transitting the paper’s ascendant at the same time).

Conclusion

The stars are all lining up to suggest that the new Sun on Sunday will conform to everyone’s prejudices of how it is likely to turn out!!! Generally speaking I predict that if the paper can survive the crisis in November 2013 it will mostly do well. The circumstances of its birth – i.e. the memory of the closure of the News of the World and how its journalists were treated by Murdoch – and are being treated by the Leveson Inquiry at the moment – will affect the general atmosphere in the news room for a long time.

Ask A Wizard 5: Chart Rectification

In response to a request from Manuel (see: How to Use Horary Astrology With Tarot) I present a short tutorial on “Chart Rectification” i.e. how to work out the most likely Ascendant when the time of birth is unknown.  There is a conventional method which involves analysing the movements of the slow-moving planets such as Saturn and Jupiter: but I suggest that it is also possible to get a quicker result using a crafty analysis of sun-sign characteristics.

How To Use Horary Astrology With Tarot

A real Hermeticist would be able to crawl all the way through.

Horary Astrology is the art of using Astrology to answer a particular question. Essentially the astrologer notes the time, date, and place that he or she first heard the question (or if it is on behalf of oneself – when he or she first formulated the question). This becomes the moment the question is “born,” and the astrologer can then draw up a chart for it in the usual manner and interpret it to gain insight into the circumstances in which the question arose, what is likely to happen, and what the eventual outcome will be. Horary Astrology is slightly different from Natal Astrology, although the similarities are such that one who has already mastered the latter can easily learn to practice the former.

The leading text on the subject is Christian Astrology by William Lilly (1602 – 1681). Wikipedia claims that Lilly was the last major practitioner of Horary Astrology. I can asssure you that although it is not so well known as Natal Astrology there are still some of us who practice it today!

Being a Tarot reader as well, I find the Horary art intriguing, as it indicates a way that Astrology may be successfully combined with Tarot, to wit: by making a note of the time, date and place of when a question is asked for a tarot divination, one ought to be able to use Horary Astrology to double-check the results. Presumably if one’s astrological and tarot skills are as highly advanced as one another, one should find that the combined readings come up with the same results. In practice I find that the two types of reading complement one another, with each one providing extra details which are not apparent with the other.

Fifteen card tarot spread

So for example: the Tarot spread which I use most often is the fifteen-card spread, mainly because this was recommended for use with the first deck I ever bought, The Golden Dawn Tarot. The cards in the middle (2, 1, 3) represent the Here and Now. Those on the Right side (4, 8, 12; 7, 11, 15) represent what will happen if the Querent does not attempt to change his or her current course of action. Those on the Left ( 13, 9, 5; 14, 10, 6) however represent what will happen if he or she does attempt to change.  Moreover the top-row represents the short-term future, whilst the bottom row represents the long-term future.

Here then is a table of comparison between Horary Astrology and Tarot, specifically the fifteen-card spread.

What Horary Astrology 15 Card Spread
The circumstances in which the question arises is determined by… Luna, which represents the question itself. Its position in the chart gives information relating to the nature of the question. The distance of Luna from the last planet it conjuncted can be used to work out the date of a past event which has led to the current situation, or whether the cause is too remote in time. If Luna is “Void of Course” (i.e. it does not form a major aspect with any other planet before it leaves that particular sign), it indicates “Nothing will come of this question.” The central three cards, 2 – 1 – 3. The first card usually indicates the prime or main meaning whilst cards two and three aid in its interpretation (NB: in GD spreads, there are no “reversed” cards. Instead a card is “well-dignified” or “ill-dignified.” Dignity is determined by whether nearby cards are of a harmonious or inharmonious nature.)
The development of the question in the short-term is determined by… It depends – a horary figure admits some versatility. If the Querent is the astrologer him- or herself, the position of the Lord of the Ascendant will generally indicate what is likely to happen. The “Lord” of the Ascendant or indeed of any other given house is the Planet which rules it. In Horary Astrology Planets tend to represent actual people or things in the life of the Querent. If the Querent is someone else, then they will be represented by the Lord of the Descendant. If however the Querent is not asking on his/her own behalf but on that of someone else (e.g. a relative) or of something related to the Querent, then a house is selected to represent it and the Lord of that is examined. E.g. the tenth house relative to the Ascendant represents the Astrologer’s mother; the eleventh house relative to the Descendant (i.e. the fifth) represents the Friend of a querent where the querent is someone else, etc. The cards along the top row. The three on the right represent what will happen if the Querent does nothing in particular to changer his/her fate; the cards on the left represent what will happen if they do try something. Each triad of cards is interpreted in a similar manner to that above, with the left and right cards determing whether the middle card is well- or ill-dignified.
The end of the matter is determined by… The fourth house, and its ruler. Also, in a manner similar to that mentioned above, the position of Luna can also be used to determine when in the future a decisive event will occur. The cards along the bottom row. Those on the right can be imagined as being what will arise as a consequence of those on the right top-row; similarly with those on the left, mutatis mutandis.
Miscellaneous extra information is given by… Lilly’s work, cited above, gives examples of how a Horary figure may be used to extra effect in certain particular cases, e.g. finding lost items. A complete list of all the possible applications would be to long to put here. The number of each different type of card may also add another layer of interpretation, for example: the number of Aces, the number of Court Cards, the number of Trumps, and the number of cards of a particular suit. Personally, I only look upon the number of a particular type of card as significant if it is noticeably greater than the average number one would expect from an evenly shuffled deck. I.e. out of fifteen cards, the average number of

  • Any one suit is 2.7;
  • Trumps is 4.2;
  • Court cards is 3.1;
  • Aces is 0.8.
The relative merits of each type of divination are… Horary astrology aspires to give a more mathematical or precisely vision of the outcome of the question. Being somewhat arbitary it provides a tough yard-stick which forces the diviner to consider factors which might not have been apparent in a more subjective system such as tarot. Whilst not having a mechanism for being as definite as to dates etc as a Horary figure, I find the tarot cards provide more nuances of meaning than is suggested bylooking at the planets alone (this may just be a personal opinion.)

How are you celebrating LoveFriday2011?

Aphrodite

Friday 7th October 2011 is, astrologically speaking, the best day of the year to invoke Venus, the planet of Love. It has nothing to do with the date but with the fact the planets are lined up in the most auspicious manner on that particular day. I have explained the full reasons for why this is so in a post from last year entitled Wedding Date for Prince William and Kate Middleton predicted by Astrology. Unfortunately the Royal couple chose not to go with my recommendations, but the fact remains that tomorrow is an excellent day for embarking on matters associated with the planet Venus, such as getting married, forming a long-term relationship with a new lover, etc.

I personally will be doing some ritual which will involve a Graeco-Egyptian invocation of Venus.

I wish you all a happy LoveFriday2011, and please share any glad tidings in the comments section below. 🙂

The Ley of the Land (slight return)

Yesterday’s post about Avebury garnered some very interesting comments (thanks to all concerned). I would like to share one further factoid which an astrologer friend first told me, which I could have mentioned yesterday but it slipped my mind at the time. It is this: Avebury’s latitude is 51º 25′ 43″ N – which is the same number of degrees as the seventh part of a circle.

Immediately the Sumner Family Brain Cell prompted me to say: “Aha! So Avebury’s position must be based on astrology!” My reasoning being that back in ancient times astrology and astronomy were the same thing. The ancients would have measured Latitude by comparing the angle between a true vertical (e.g. a plumb line) and the Pole Star. Hence it is entirely possible that the ancient builders of Avebury deliberately chose that site because of the particular angle.

This is of course speculation, but we should remember that the builders of Avebury did know their Geometry, so it would have been a simple matter for them to turn their attention Vertically to the Heavens, as well as Horizontally to the land.

This actually gives me a brilliant idea for further investigation. As I stated yesterday, Avebury is on at least one major Ley Line which passes through not just nearby Silbury Hill, but (thanks to correspondents pointing it out) places further afield, including even Carnac in Brittany. Hence, if my theory that astrological considerations played a part in choosing Avebury’s location is correct, we should expect to find sacred sites where major Ley Lines hit latitudes of  (e.g.) 72º, 60º, 513/7º, 45º, etc.
